Let us explain … A company called MGA Entertainment made a popular line of toys called Poopsie Slime Surprise. These toys are dancing unicorns that poop sparkling slime. Isn’t that every kid’s dream?
MGA ran a bunch of commercials with animated unicorns singing and dancing to a song called “My Poops,” which had the catchy hook “my poops, my poops, my sparkly glitter poops!”
If that banger sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a play on BEP’s classic song “My Humps.” This is what led to a lawsuit. BMG, which is Will.i.am’s record label and music publishing company, owns most of the rights to the 2005 hit song. It says that “My Poops” clearly stole the melody, tempo, chord progression, and even has a singer who sounds a lot like Fergie.
BMG says that MGA didn’t have permission to use the song, so it wants at least $10,000,000 in damages. If that seems like a lot, keep in mind that “My Humps” was a HUGE hit. It has more than 700 million views on YouTube alone, and it won the 2006 MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip Hop Video.
If BMG wins even a small portion of the $10 million in court, this could be the most expensive joke ever. We asked MGA for their thoughts… No word back yet.
The real shocker is that, as far as we knew, unicorns threw up rainbows.
