Brittney Griner surprised a group of people at an MLK day march in Phoenix on what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 94th birthday. This was less than six weeks after she was freed from a Russian prison colony.
The Phoenix Mercury star and her wife, Cherelle, went to the event and took pictures with fans who were very happy to see her.
MLK Jr. Day is always on the third Monday in January. It is a day to remember one of the most important civil rights leaders in world history.
In 1992, Arizona was the last state to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day after President Ronald Reagan made it a federal holiday in 1983. (though it was first observed in 1986.)
Brittney has a special connection to Arizona, since she has spent her whole WNBA career with the Mercury after dominating at Baylor.
