No, folks, the doctors are NOT leaving.
ABC announced late on Friday that Grey’s Anatomy will be back for a 20th season, making it the longest-running medical drama on TV.
In 2023 and 2024, the show will look a little different.
First, as was already known, Krista Vernoff just quit her job as showrunner.
Vernoff said in a January statement, “It has been the honor of a lifetime to be given the chance to run Grey’s Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the last four.”
“It’s impossible to say enough about how passionate the fans are and how much these shows affect their hearts and minds.
“It’s impossible to measure how much talent these two amazing casts and these two brilliant writing rooms have, and week after week, these crews make magic.”
From now on, this important job will be done by Meg Marinis, who is the executive producer.
Also, Kelly McCreary just said a few weeks ago that she was leaving Grey’s Anatomy after nine seasons.
At the time, the actress said, “It has been a huge honor to be a part of such a legendary TV show as Grey’s Anatomy.”
“I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, and ABC for giving me the chance, and to the amazing fans for their passionate support.
“It is a rare gift to be able to spend nine years getting to know a character inside and out while telling stories that affect people all over the world.”
The most famous person to leave the show this year was Ellen Pompeo.
She had been the show’s main character, Meredith Grey, from the very first episode.
But Pompeo will still do the voiceover at the start and end of each episode… She will also be in the last episode on May 18.
It’s still not clear what will happen with Pompeo in Season 20.
Grey’s Anatomy is still a huge hit for ABC and is the number one show on the network for adults 18–49.
At the moment, 10.7 million people watch each episode on Live+35 across all platforms.
Several new people were added to the cast at the beginning of Season 19 to play the new class of first-year surgical residents.
Chandra Wilson plays Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. plays Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd plays Owen Hunt, Kim Raver plays Teddy Altman, Kelly McCreary plays Maggie Pierce, Anthony Hill plays Winston Ndugu, Caterina Scorsone plays Amelia Shepherd, Camilla Luddington plays Jo Wilson, Chris Carmack plays Link Lincoln, and Jake Borelli plays Levi Schmitt.
