Shakira has responded to Spanish authorities, alleging she is the victim of a smear campaign and has receipts to prove it.
The singer filed court documents in Spain on Friday, responding to charges that she neglected to pay more than $14 million in taxes on income generated between 2012 and 2014.
Shakira claims she was not a resident of Spain at the time. She is required to pay taxes in the country if she spends 183 days or more there in a single year, according to the country’s laws.
She claims that during the time in question, she paid $10,141,075 in taxes to the United States government – this is when she was a coach on “The Voice.” She claims she was not in Spain for the required reason.
