LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — At Allegiant Stadium, Manchester United lost to Borussia Dortmund by a score of 3-2 to end their tour of the United States.

Erik Ten Hag’s team lost their third game in the U.S. because of how badly they played on defense.

Diogo Dalot gave United the lead, but Donyell Malen scored twice in one minute at the end of the first half for Dortmund. Antony tied it up in the second half, but Youssoufa Moukoko scored the winning goal after the defense made another mistake.

Ten Hag’s team looked like a reserve team because Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, and Facundo Pellistri all started, but he will still be upset about the many mistakes that led to Dortmund’s goals.

The Dutchman also made a point with his choice of captain. He gave the armband to Scott McTominay, even though Harry Maguire was on the team, just a week after taking it away from England’s defender Bruno Fernandes and giving it to McTominay.

United got off to a good start and took the lead halfway through the first half when Dalot picked up Van de Beek’s pass on the edge of the box and put a controlled shot into the corner.

After 30 minutes, though, the game started to go Dortmund’s way. The young player Omari Forson got into a fight with Julian Ryerson and Karim Adeyemi, and he was soon replaced.

As the 19-year-old walked off, McTominay and Christian Eriksen gave him words of encouragement, but Ten Hag gave him a nearly one-minute-long lecture from the sidelines.

It looked like United would be ahead at halftime, but the bad defense let Dortmund score two quick goals before the break.

First, Brandon Williams was turned too easily on the left side, and Malen scored from close range after the ball was moved into the penalty area.

Then, just 18 seconds after the restart, Victor Lindelof carelessly gave the ball to former United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, who passed it to Malen, who scored his second goal and made it 2-1.

Early in the second half, things almost got worse for United.

Maguire caused problems for Eriksen, and when Dortmund broke quickly, they almost scored a third goal, but substitute André Onana made a good save on Sébastien Haller. Even though Onana has only been at the club for two weeks, he felt confident enough to run out of his goal to yell at Maguire.

United returned from being down 3-1 to tie the game at 2-2 when Mats Hummels lost the ball in his penalty area, and Antony scored with a cool finish in the far corner.

After 60 minutes, Ten Hag put in his best players, but that didn’t help United win the game. Instead, Dortmund quickly took advantage of another mistake in defense.

This time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka gave the ball away without needing to, and Marco Reus sent a cross to Moukoko, who beat Onana and gave the Bundesliga team the win.
