SALT LAKE CITY—Justin Gaethje doesn’t have the lightweight title, but he’s in an unusual situation where he may have many more cards than most top contenders.
Gaethje (25-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) was in the main event of UFC 291 on Saturday at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. He again went through parts of his life that would have been unimaginable years ago.
After the fight, Gaethje told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a news conference, “This is such a cool life.” “I never thought I would be here as a child. Every day, I thank God for this.”
Gaethje had just won the BMF title by knocking out Dustin Poirier, who had a record of 29-8 in MMA and 21-7 in the UFC. In doing so, he avenged a loss from April 2018 and made it possible that he will be the next person to win the UFC lightweight title without any competition.
Gaethje sat at the table with his black BMF belt before him and thought about his choices. After the fight, the biggest draw in MMA, UFC star Conor McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC), tweeted that he was interested in Gaethje. Gaethje said he is interested in the idea, but there are problems.
Gaethje said, “I think he’s turned me down six times.” “Most of the time, you have to lose to fight him. So I don’t know what’s happening. … I compete in MMA. I enjoy getting into big fights. I like fun things. I think it sounds pretty exciting. I won’t fight someone who is on steroids. I have never used steroids, and I never will. Well, I might when I retire. But I’ve never used steroids and don’t want to fight someone cheating. I probably shouldn’t say that if I want to fight, but it’s true.”
