O’Connor’s life was full of events and often sparked debate. Because of her political views, she was often the target of backlash.
During a performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992, O’Connor shocked people when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II and yelled, “Fight the real enemy!”
O’Connor had to deal with the international outrage for the rest of her life.
Soon after her SNL performance, Sinead was booed when she opened for Bob Dylan at Madison Square Garden. This scene opened a 2022 Showtime documentary about Sinead.

Even though her beliefs and personal life were a source of controversy, O’Connor had a loyal following throughout her career.
She kept making new music all the way up to 2014 when she put out her tenth and last studio album.
O’Connor said she would stop making music in 2021 so she could focus on her health and family.

Reps for the singer said Wednesday afternoon that O’Connor had died.
A press release said, “It is with great sadness that we tell you that our beloved SinĂ©ad has died.”
“Her family and friends are heartbroken, and they have asked for privacy during this hard time.”

In 2021, O’Connor published a book about her life and career. In it, she said that she had no regrets about how hard things had been for her.
“Many people say or think that ripping up the picture of the pope was the end of my career. “I don’t feel that way,” she wrote.
“I feel like having a number-one record derailed my career, and tearing the picture put me back on the right track.”

Even though her music was often overshadowed by scandals, O’Connor is remembered today as a huge talent and a one-of-a-kind figure in the world of music.
During this very hard time, our thoughts are with her friends and family.
